Public and private is an art project that comprehends the theme of borders in the modern world: what is private and what is public, and who sets this framework. The project consists of two parts: the Public and Private exhibition opens the intimate space of artists' workshops at the Cube. Moscow public space and the residency for an emerging artist Cube. Moscow Art Residency 2019 provides a research and financial opportunities to reflect on a proposed topic and create his/her own project.

Optimization of private — public implies at least two fundamental meanings: 1. hidden and accessible; 2. Individual versus collective (part versus whole). The theme of the project is site specific: it offers to comprehend the interaction of the openness of exhibition sites and intimacy of the experience of meeting with art and addresses the following issues:
 — How can one distinguish the private and intimate space of the artist's workshop, placed in the public space of the modern gallery cluster?
 — How do you understand that art affects the work of the artist?

In the format of total installations at the Cube. Moscow artists will open their workshops that will allow the viewer to immerse themselves in their world through the built and proposed boundaries, to better understand the method of work and find a clue to understanding their art.

As a part of the Public and Private project, the innovative art platform Cube. Moscow, together with the non-profit foundation *MOCT Contemporary Russia Arts Foundation, is opening the first annual research residency for artists. The Cube. Moscow Art Residency 2019 will also be held from September 4 to 29, 2019. The focus of this year's residency will be the support of an emerging artist who will be selected through an open call among students and graduates of 2015−2019 of Moscow schools teaching contemporary art: Institute of Contemporary Art (ISI), Rodchenko School, British Higher School of Design (BHSD), Baza Institute, and Free Workshops School of Contemporary Art.

This year the main emphasis is on comprehending the intersection of territories of performative practices and visual art. The selected artist will receive a grant from the *MOCT Contemporary Russia Arts Foundation to participate in the residency during September 2019, being a part of which the artist will be able to work on a project on the theme of the residency Public and Private.
The expert board: Daria Demekhina, Katya Bochavar, MishMash group, Sergey Pakhom Pakhomov, Alexey Tregubov, Olya Kroytor.

* MOCT Contemporary Russia Arts Foundation is a non-profit foundation created to contribute to the development and promotion of Russian contemporary art in Russia and abroad, as well as to support young talents during the development of their careers through the provision of grants and other formats.

** Daria Demekhina — curator of the Cube.
